A static compression cryotherapy device is often used in conjunction with cryotherapy to treat acute injuries. To date, the main reason for using a pressurized cryotherapy device is to increase the external pressure on the tissue to prevent the formation of edema (swelling). This happens by preventing the loss of fluid from the vessels of the affected area and makes the accumulation of fluid more difficult. This wonderful method has been used in the prevention of deep vein thrombosis, wound care, as well as edema management.
Scientific studies have shown that the use of cold compression therapy for ankle fractures after surgery will be beneficial in reducing edema and, therefore, may also be beneficial for pain and mobility of the ankle joint. In athletes, cryotherapy is most effective in recovery when applied within the first 24 hours after exercise or injury. Cryotherapy has also been shown to increase joint flexibility.
Studies have shown that the body activates the hunting reaction after only 10 minutes of cryotherapy, at temperatures below 49 degrees Fahrenheit (9.5 degrees Celsius). The hunting response is a cycle of vasoconstriction (decreased blood flow), then vasodilation (increased blood flow), which increases the delivery of oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to the tissue.
Increased blood flow can reduce cell death, limit tissue damage, and help remove cellular waste products. Under normal conditions, the hunting reaction is necessary for tissue health, but it only increases pain, inflammation, and cell death as additional blood enters the area, which can be resolved using cryotherapy.
Cold compression wraps in a pressure cryotherapy machine using ice or freezable gel are a much safer product because such products do not exceed the cooling or freezing time recommended by the reputable medical community.
